ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the cardiovascular health status of adults in China by using the "Life's Essential 8" score, and provide reference for the development and improvement of cardiovascular disease prevention and control policies and measures. Methods: Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance was conducted in 298 counties/districts in 2015 in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) across China, multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was used to select 45 households in each village or neighborhood, and 20 households were further selected to conduct dietary surveys. In this study, a total of 70 093 adults aged ≥20 years who completed the dietary survey and had complete information were included, their cardiovascular health status were assessed by using the "Life's Essential 8" score, a cardiovascular health scoring standard released by the American Heart Association in 2022. All results were adjusted using complex design-based sampling weights to achieve a better estimate of the population. Results: In 2015, the overall cardiovascular health score of Chinese adults aged ≥20 years was 73.3±12.6, the score was significantly higher in women (77.9±11.6) than in men (68.7±11.8), and higher in urban area (74.5±12.8) than in rural area (71.9±12.2), the differences were significant (P<0.001). It was estimated that about 0.25% (95%CI: 0.16%-0.33%) of adults in China had cardiovascular health score of 100, and 33.0% (95%CI: 31.6%-34.3%), 63.2% (95%CI: 62.1%-64.3%), and 3.9% (95%CI: 3.5%-4.2%) of adults had high, moderate and low cardiovascular health scores, respectively. The proportion of those with high cardiovascular health scores was relatively low in men, those with low education level, those with low income, those living in rural areas, and those living in southwest China (P<0.001). Of the eight factors, diet had the lowest mean score (46.0, 95%CI: 44.7-47.3), followed by blood pressure (59.4, 95%CI: 58.2-60.6) and tobacco exposure (61.4, 95%CI: 60.6-62.2). Conclusions: The cardiovascular health status of two-thirds of adult population in China needs to be improved. Diet, tobacco exposure, and blood pressure are the factors affecting the cardiovascular health of Chinese population, to which close attention needs to be paid, and men, rural residents, and those with lower socioeconomic status are key groups in cardiovascular health promotion.

ABSTRACT

Organoids are self-organized cellular clusters in three-dimensional culture, which can be derived from a single stem cell, progenitor or cell clusters of different lineages resembling in vivo tissue architecture of an organ. In the recent years, organoids technology has contributed to the revolutionary changes in stem cell and cancer fields. In this review, we have briefly overviewed the emerging landscape of prostate organoid technology (POT) in prostate research. In addition, we have also summarized the potential application of POT in the understanding of prostate stem cell and cancer biology and the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer. Lastly, we have critically discussed key challenges that lie in the current state of POT and provided a future perspective on the second-generation of POT, which should better recapitulate cellular behaviors and drug responses of prostate cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the preliminary application of "biocopy function" in digital technology of temporary crown in severe tooth attrition, so as to reduce the difficulty of final restoration adjustment in severe tooth wear cases, and save clinical time.@*METHODS@#Twelve patients aged between 40 and 65 years with severe tooth attrition were recruited in this study. The experimental group (6 cases, 3 females and 3 males) used the method of digital copy of temporary restoration shape when making the final restoration, and the control group (6 cases, 3 females and 3 males) used the traditional method to make the final restoration. The mean time of central occlusal adjustment and protrusive and lateral occlusal adjustment of each crown, the number of follow-up visits of the patients were recorded and statistically analyzed. The occlusal comfort of the first and the third months after wearing the prosthesis was evaluated by the patients, and the difference of the occlusal comfort of the final prosthesis made by the two methods was compared (the full score was 10 points). The occlusal adjustment time and occlusal comfort score were used as measurement data. Single sample t test was used. The number of follow-up visits was count data. Rank sum test was used for non-normal continuous variables.@*RESULTS@#The mean occlusal time of each crown adjustment in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.01), and the median number of follow-up visits in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.01). The average occlusal comfort score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group at the first time (P < 0.01). After three months of crown wearing, the median occlusal comfort score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#In the case of severe tooth attrition, it is feasible to use the "biocopy function" in the design software to design the final prosthesis, which is conducive to reduce the difficulty of adjustment and achieve predictable functional and aesthetic effects, which is of great significance to save clinical time and improve the accuracy of restoration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore a novel method for fabricating removable partial dentures (RPDs) using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies and to evaluate their fits for different assemblies in vitro.@*METHODS@#A standard stone cast of mandibular partial edentulous jaw was scanned using a lab scanner. Based on the digital cast, thirteen complete RPDs were designed combing dental CAD software and reverse engineering software, and then fabricated using PEEK by milling machine. Fits of assemblies were evaluated quantitatively by measuring the spaces between RPDs and casts. The gaps between RPDs and stone casts in different assemblies were duplicated using light-body silicone impression material and then measured using three-dimensional (3D) digital analysis methods in virtue of a dedicated software. Statistically, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the difference of gaps among assemblies in different shapes such as occlusal rest, denture base, and major connector. Paired-samples t test was used to compare the gaps difference for the similar shape assemblies in different areas.@*RESULTS@#One-piece PEEK RPDs were successfully designed and fabricated by CAD/CAM, and all the RPDs were well-seated on stone casts. The gaps between occlusal rests and casts [(84.3±23.6) μm] were significantly larger than those of denture bases [(32.5±27.8) μm] and major connectors [(49.9±47.0) μm], which meant that the fits of denture bases and major connectors were better than that of occlusal rests. However, the fits of all assemblies could be accepted clinically. For the similar shape assemblies in different areas, there were no significantly differences for gaps between distal extension denture bases [(25.1±55.3) μm] and non-extensive denture bases [(41.5±17.7) μm]. The gaps of occlusal rests adjacent and nonadjacent to the edentulous space were (86.1±29.8) μm and (80.8±42.1) μm respectively and there were no significantly difference between them either. These results implied that different locations had no apparent effect on the fits of assemblies.@*CONCLUSION@#With the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology, PEEK can be used to fabricate one-piece removable partial dentures. And all assemblies of the one-piece PEEK RPDs showed satisfying fits in vitro, indicating a promising clinical application in the future.

ABSTRACT

Hashitoxicosis patients have the clinical characteristics of Graves' disease with hyperthyroidism and the pathological phenotype of Hashitoxicosis. The initial stage of hyperthyroidism is almost indistinguishable from Graves' disease in clinical manifestations, including increased uptake of radioactive iodine in the thyroid and positive antibodies to thyrotropin receptors, as well as high levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies and/or thyroglobulin antibodies. Generally, the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are relatively mild, and the stage of hyperthyroidism is relatively short. Hashitoxicosis patients are sensitive to antithyroid drugs and are prone to hypothyroidism in the course of treatment. It will develop into permanent hypothyroidism after 3-24 months. Therefore, antithyroid drugs should be started at low doses, thyroid function should be detected frequently, and timely drug adjustment should be made.Radioactive iodine or surgical treatment should be avoided.

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a regression algorithm model that applies to bone age estimation of Xinjiang Uygur adolescents with machine learning methods such as histogram of oriented gradient (HOG), local binary patterns (LBP), support vector machine (SVM), principal component analysis (PCA). Methods DR images of knee-joints from 275 male and 225 female subjects aged 12.0-<19.0 years old were collected, PCA method was used to reduce the dimensionality of the HOG and LBP features, and support vector regression (SVR) was used to establish a knee-joint bone age estimation algorithm model. Stratified random sampling method was used to select 215 male samples, 180 female samples for the model training set. K-fold cross validation method was used to optimize parameters of the model. The remaining samples as the independent test set was used to compare the sample's true age and model estimated age, and had an accuracy rate in the statistical error range of ±0.8 and ±1.0 years, respectively. Then the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were calculated. Results The accuracy rate of male in the statistical error range of ±0.8 and ±1.0 year was 80.67%, 89.33%, respectively. The MAE and RMSE were 0.486 and 0.606 years, respectively. The accuracy rate of female in the statistical error range of ±0.8 and ±1.0 years was 80.19%, 90.45%, respectively. The MAE and RMSE were 0.485 and 0.590 years, respectively. Conclusion Establishment of prediction model for bone age estimation by feature dimension reduction of HOG and LBP in DR images of knee-joint based on PCA and SVM has relatively high accuracy.

OBJECTIVE@#To develop a digital workflow of orthodontic-prosthodontic multidisciplinary treatment plan which can be applied in complicated anterior teeth esthetic rehabilitation, in order to enhance the efficiency of communication between dentists and patients, and improve the predictability of treatment outcome.@*METHODS@#Twenty patients with the potential needs of orthodontic-prosthodontic multidisciplinary treatment to solve their complicated esthetic problems in anterior teeth were recruited in this study. Digital models of patients' both dental arches and soft tissues were captured using intra oral scanner. Direct prosthodontic (DP) treatment plan and orthodontic-prosthodontic (OP) treatment plan were carried out for each patient. For DP treatment plans, digital wax-up models were directly designed on original digital models using prosthodontic design system. For OP treatment plans, virtual-setups were performed using orthodontic analyze system according to orthodontic and esthetic criteria and imported to prosthodontic design system to finalize the digital wax-up models. These two treatment plans were shown to the patients and demonstrated elaborately. Each patient rated two treatment plans using visual analogue scales and the medians of scores of two treatment plans were analyzed using signed Wilcoxon test. Having taken into consideration various related factors, including time, costs of treatment, each patient chose a specific treatment plan. For the patients chose DP treatment plans, digital wax-up models were exported and printed into resin diagnostic models which would be utilized in the prosthodontic treatment process. For the patients chose OP treatment plans, virtual-setups were used to fabricate aligners or indirect bonding templates and digital wax-up models were also exported and printed into resin diagnostic models for prosthodontic treatment after orthodontic treatment completed.@*RESULTS@#The medians of scores of DP treatment plan and OP treatment plan were calculated and analyzed by IBM SPSS 20. The median of scores of DP treatment plan was 8.4, the minimum value was 6.9 and the maximum value was 9.3. The median of scores of OP treatment plan was 9.0, the minimum value was 7.9 and the maximum value was 9.6. The median of scores of OP was significantly higher than that of DP (Z=-3.23, P<0.01). Finally, 12 patients chose OP treatment plans and 8 patients chose DP treatment plans.@*CONCLUSION@#For cases with complex esthetic problems in anterior teeth, a digital workflow can demonstrate final treatment outcome and help patients make suitable treatment decisions. In our study, the orthodontic-prosthodontic multidisciplinary treatment plan is feasible which can provide predictions of treatment outcome and improve esthetic outcome with patients' satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>In head and neck neoplasm survivors treated with brain irradiation, metabolic alterations would occur in the radiation-induced injury area. The mechanism of these metabolic alterations has not been fully understood, while the alternations could be sensitively detected by proton (1H) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). In this study, we investigated the metabolic characteristics of radiation-induced brain injury through a long-term follow-up after radiation treatment using MRS in vivo.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 12 adult Sprague-Dawley rats received a single dose of 30 Gy radiation treatment to semi-brain (field size: 1.0 cm × 2.0 cm; anterior limit: binocular posterior inner canthus connection; posterior limit: external acoustic meatus connection; internal limit: sagittal suture). Conventional magnetic resonance imaging and single-voxel 1H-MRS were performed at different time points (in month 0 before irradiation as well as in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th months after irradiation) to investigate the alternations in irradiation field. N-acetylaspartate/choline (NAA/Cho), NAA/creatinine (Cr), and Cho/Cr ratios were measured in the bilateral hippocampus and quantitatively analyzed with a repeated-measures mixed-effects model and multiple comparison test.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Significant changes in the ratios of NAA/Cho (F = 57.37, Pg < 0.001), NAA/Cr (F = 54.49, Pg < 0.001), and Cho/Cr (F = 9.78, Pg = 0.005) between the hippocampus region of the irradiated semi-brain and the contralateral semi-brain were observed. There were significant differences in NAA/Cho (F = 9.17, Pt < 0.001) and NAA/Cr (F = 13.04, Pt < 0.001) ratios over time. The tendency of NAA/Cr to change with time showed no significant difference between the irradiated and contralateral sides. Nevertheless, there were significant differences in the Cho/Cr ratio between these two sides.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>MRS can sensitively detect metabolic alternations. Significant changes of metabolites ratio in the first few months after radiation treatment reflect the metabolic disturbance in the acute and early-delayed stages of radiation-induced brain injuries.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Jianpi Liqi Yiliu Formula (JLYF) combined with cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells for treating patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Between January 2011 and January 2014, 60 advanced HCC patients were enrolled in this study, who were assigned to the treatment group and the control group according to their willingness for taking JLYF, 30 cases in each group. All patients received CIK cell treatment: 1 x 10⁹-3 x 10⁹ each time, by intravenous dripping from the 1st day to the 3rd day, once per day. Besides, patients in the treatment group took JLYF decoction, while those in the control group took Chinese medical decoction by syndrome typing. All patients received treatment of at least two cycles. The time to progression (TTP) , overall survival (OS), disease control rate (DCR), performance status scale (PS), Child-Pugh scale, and adverse reactions were observed, and subgroup analyzed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>To May 31, 2014, all patients reached the clinical endpoint. TTP was 3.5 months (95% Cl: 3.30-4.10) in the treatment group, better than that (2.5 months, 95% CI: 2.32-2.68) of the control group (P < 0.05). DCR was 36.7% in the treatment group and 30.0% in the control group (P > 0.05). OS was 5.2 months (95% CI: 4.53-5.87) in the treatment group and 4.6 months (95% CI: 4.06-5.14) in the control group (P > 0.05). The PS scale was 1.60 ± 0.10 after treatment, lower than that (1.80 ± 0.09) before treatment in the treatment group (P < 0.05). When the PS scale was 0-2 or Child-Pugh scale was class A, TTP was longer in the treatment group than in the control group (P < 0.05). No adverse reaction occurred in the two groups during the treatment course.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The combination of JLYF with ClK cell treatment could prolong advanced HCC patients' TTP, improve PS scale, as compared with syndrome typed Chinese medical decoction treatment group. Besides, when the PS scale was 0-2 or Child-Pugh scale was class A, it was a better treatment program for advanced HCC patients.</p>

ABSTRACT

Deer velvet antler is the only mammal organ which can continuous regenerate. Currently, international scholars are interested in antler that is defined as a perfect regeneration model of neuro, blood vessel, connective tissue, cartilage, and bones. In 1986, we started to study the separation of active protein and peptide of fresh velvet antler using classic biochemical methods. After entering the 21st century, we further investigated the differentiation of antler proteome from different growth periods using advance differential proteomics approach, and unveiled the correlation between the proteome difference and life cycle. The international antler research has entered the stage of molecular biology, and will no doubt have a profound impact on the modern biomedical fields, such as regenerative medicine, organ degeneration and dysplasia, trauma medicine and anti-inflammatory treatment, growth factor research, as well as creation of new medical thinking.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the distribution of Chinese medicine (CM) syndrome types in primary liver cancer (PLC) and their differences of the survival time.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From May 2007 to March 2009, recruited were 151 PLC inpatients at Department of Tumor, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Their survival time were statistically calculated. Patients' average survival time and median survival time were calculated using Kaplan-Meier method. The Log-rank test was used to analyze their differences of survival time among different CM syndrome types.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The proportion of CM syndrome types in PLC patients were ranked from high to low as follows: mutual accumulation of dampness and blood stasis syndrome [MADBSS, 43.0% (65/151)], Gan-stagnation Pi-deficiency syndrome [GSPDS, 34.4% (52/151)], qi stagnation blood stasis syndrome [QSBSS, 9.3% (14/151)], retention of damp-heat syndrome [RDHS, 8.6%(13/151)], and Gan-Shen yin deficiency syndrome [GSYDS, 4.6% (7/ 151)]. The median survival time of different CM syndrome types were ranked from longer to shorter as follows: GSPDS (14.77 months), QSBSS (6.13 months), RDHS (5.27 months), MADBSS (4.78 months), and GSYDS (0.80 months). The mean survival times were ranked from longer to shorter as follows: GSPDS (12.40 months), QSBSS (8.84 months), MADBSS (6.99 months), RDHS (7.08 months), and GSYDS (0.72 months). There was statistical difference in the difference of the survival time among different CM syndrome types (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>GSPDS and MADBSS were the most common CM syndrome types in PLC patients. There was difference in the survival time between GSPDS and MADBSS/between RDHS and GSYDS. There was difference in the survival time between MADBSS and GSYDS. Patients of GSPDS might get the best prognosis, while patients of GSYDS might get the poorest prognosis.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study transdermal absorption characteristics of eugenol in compound Nanxing pain-relieving cataplasm, and discuss the effect of gaultherolin on the transdermal absorption of the cataplasm.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>The improved franz diffusing cell was adopted with hairless mice skins as transdermal carriers. The content of eugenol in receptor liquid, skins and cataplasm were analyzed by HPLC and compared with the cataplasm without gaultherolin.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>The penetration rates of eugenol of cataplasms with and without gaultherolin were 13.18 and 9.58 microg x cm(-2) x h(-1), with the retention amount in skins of (185.02 +/- 19.23) and (160.23 +/- 16.54) microg x g(-1) and the retention amount in cataplasms was (1.96 +/- 0.12) and (1.71 +/- 0.15) mg, respectively.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Eugenol in compound Nanxing pain-relieving cataplasm has good pereutaoeous permeation. Gaultherolin in the cataplasm prescription can promote the absorption of eugenol.</p>
